SILVIS SCHOOL DISTRICT #34 BOARD OF EDUCATION MEETING

FEBRUARY 18, 2009

The meeting was called to order at 6:04 p.m.

            Members Present:        Piper, Stone, Pustelnik, Ciasto, Jecks

            Members Absent:        None

 

Motion by Piper, second by Jecks to approve the minutes of the January 21, 2009 meeting and the February 5, 2009 special meeting.

            Motion carried by voice acclamation.

 

Motion by Jecks, second by Piper to approve the February expenditures and Treasurer’s report.

            Ayes:   Piper, Stone, Pustelnik, Ciasto, Jecks

            Nays:   None

 

Communication/Recognition

 

·                     TJ Taylor, former Board member was recognized for his service with a gift certificate.  Gary Taylor, who was not present, was similarly recognized.

·                     Mr. Bergles reminded the Board about the events to be held February 19, 2009 in the building including the Math and Science Night, Blood Drive, and Meet the Candidates.

·                     A letter was shared from Senator Mike Jacobs regarding his willingness to help the district try to acquire some of the federal stimulus money.

·                     A graphic arts intern will be available to the district from Clinton Community College at no charge.  There are several potential projects including signs, brochures, mascot, website and forms that could be assigned to the intern.

·                     World Population, which are scientific research maps that show United States standards compared to the standards of other countries, was discussed.

 

Mr. Michael Hughes, George O. Barr Elementary School principal, Ms. Jennifer Caldwell, Silvis Junior High teacher/counselor, Ms. Mari Thomson, Silvis Junior High teacher, and Mr. Lyle Lohse, School Board candidate, were present.

 

There was no public participation.

 

Ms. Thomson gave a presentation on the social studies/handwriting textbook selection committee and their recommendations.

 

Motion by Jecks, second by Ciasto to approve the Textbook Selection Committee’s recommendation for 6-8 social studies as presented, to approve the employment of Michael W. Hughes as George O. Barr Elementary School principal and Art Byczynski as Silvis Junior High School principal for the 2009-2010 school year, to approve the employment of Michael R. Hughes for 200 days for the 2009-2010 school year at a salary of $55,000 plus benefits, and to approve the employment of David Carton as bus driver/monitor,  Kristine Sersig as bus monitor, and Jason Schluenz as custodial/maintenance/bus monitor.

Motion by Jecks, second by Piper to approve the land work that needs to be done per the survey with no specific dollar restriction.

            Ayes:   Piper, Stone, Pustelnik, Ciasto, Jecks

            Nays:   None

 

Mr. Bergles updated the Board on the potential for the stimulus money to include increases for FY09 money for Title I and IDEA.

 

Motion by Jecks, second by Ciasto to adjourn the meeting at 6:36 p.m.
